Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) conducted a Road Safety Programme, under UN Decade of Action 2021 /2030 in the Kandy District, specially providing helmets to School Children on 29th October 2024 at Maraka Maha Vidyalaya, Matale.
This programme was aimed to educate children, parents, teachers, motor cyclist and may others in the Kandy District on the importance of children wearing helmets, not only to abiding by the law but also to keep safety factor to children in their mind.
The Traffic Police officers provided a vivid lectures and demonstrations on the safety of wearing the helmets to children when they travel with the parents on two -wheeler.
The prime purpose of this project by the Automobile Association is to overcome fatalities and injuries among children on the motor cycle without helmet. From the records, we find in the year 2022 there had been 806 deaths among the motorcyclists of which 411 deaths were below the age of 18 and also there were disabilities amounting to 8,144.
The Traffic Police Officers in Kandy District assisted to obtain the required data of the children from schools in the area who do not wear the helmets when they travel on the motor cycle.
